Teaching Explanation
The gospel calls us to return
Jesus joins repentance with believing the gospel. After His resurrection, He sends His disciples to proclaim repentance and forgiveness in His name. This is not a demand that people repair themselves before approaching God. It is the announcement of mercy in Christ and the call to respond to it.
Grace gives what self-punishment cannot
Acts 11:18 describes repentance leading to life as something God grants. Tears, fear and humiliation cannot purchase forgiveness. Equally, a brief apology that defends the same harmful conduct has not faced the call to turn. Grace welcomes the sinner while challenging the direction of sin.
A foundation that continues to support us
Conversion includes a decisive turning to God. Ongoing repentance is the continuing practice of believers who need correction and growth. First John 1:9 places confession within the life of a Christian community. A mature believer has not outgrown repentance; maturity should make a person more willing to recognise wrong and receive correction.
Turn toward Someone
Repentance is more than abandoning a habit for personal advantage. Paul speaks of repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ. This relationship gives confession a direction and hope. Facing sin honestly should lead toward God’s mercy, renewed obedience and appropriate efforts to repair the harm done to others.
Practical Application
Name a specific wrong without hiding behind a general statement. Confess it to God, stop defending it and choose the next act of obedience. Where another person was harmed, consider an appropriate apology and repair, while respecting their boundaries. Trust Christ’s mercy rather than attempting to earn it through self-condemnation.
